Washington has a chance to pull back into playoff contention with a victory over a reeling Jacksonville team suffering from rumors of a postseason coaching change.
You’d never know it by listening to the Redskins. Instead of rallying or encouraging talk about their chances, the Redskins locker room burped out rogue statements from a disgruntled defense unhappy about wasting their efforts for an offense that appears to be mailing games in.
Indeed, drops, turnovers, and missed assignments contributed to an ugly 40-16 loss that would have been worse if the New York Giants didn’t sit Eli Manning and Saquon Barkley for the fourth quarter.
But 40-16 sounds like the defense has some explaining to do, too. Unless they were worn out by the beginning of the second quarter, a 30-0 halftime lead can’t be all about an inept offense led by quarterbacks signed off the street and decimated by injuries.
Jacksonville didn’t fare much better in a listless 30-9 loss to the Titans. After missing a game for fighting in front of the stands in Buffalo, Leonard Fournette saw fit to physically threaten a Titans fan. Even before that story broke came a report of Tom Coughlin’s disgust at the lack of team discipline and rumors of his return to the sidelines in 2019.
All in all, two teams in disarray will face off in Northern Florida this Sunday.
Injuries and notes
Jordan Reed got all the way into Week 14 before suffering an injury this season. He will miss this week’s matchup with a sprained foot. If the Redskins are eliminated from wild-card contention, expect him to yield the field to Vernon Davis for the rest of the season.
Neither team lists other significant injuries.
Jay Gruden was expected to need a Redskins playoff appearance to save his job, but recently it was thought the team’s excellent play through early injuries might be enough. After this weeks’ statements from a contentious locker room leaked out, his seat is as hot as ever. Players seem to be conceding the season even though they are still in the position to take a wild card. That can’t be good for Gruden.
Doug Marrone was expected to get a pass on an injury-filled season after last year’s playoff run. But Coughlin is reportedly amazed at the total lack of discipline, not just the fighting and sideline manner, but with penalties, practice regimen, and assignments. Whether Coughlin takes over himself or not, there is a good chance someone other than Marrone will be in charge of the field in 2019.

Who will win the Jaguars-Redskins game?
Normally, we consider which teams want to win more or need to win more. With neither team playing with a purpose, this might come down to who cares less about whether they win or lose. It could be a misjudgment, and a great NFL battle could break out. But we’re thinking it will be ugly to watch.
